Strategy

Under normal circumstances, the Matthews India Fund seeks to achieve its investment objective by investing at least 80% of its net assets, which include borrowings for investment purposes, in publicly traded common stocks, preferred stocks and convertible securities of companies located in India. The Fund seeks to invest in companies capable of sustainable growth based on the fundamental characteristics of those companies, including balance sheet information; number of employees; size and stability of cash flow; management’s depth, adaptability and integrity; product lines; marketing strategies; corporate governance; and financial health.

Risks

Investments in Asian securities may involve risks such as social and political instability, market illiquidity, exchange-rate fluctuations, a high level of volatility and limited regulation. Investing in emerging markets involves different and greater risks, as these countries are substantially smaller, less liquid and more volatile than securities markets in more developed markets. In addition, because the fund concentrates its investments in a single-country, its share price may be more volatile, and more affected by political, economic and other events in the country in which it invests than that of funds that are not as geographically concentrated.

These and other risks associated with investing in the Fund can be found in the prospectus.

Commentary

Period ended September 30, 2026

Market Environment

  • The macroeconomic backdrop in India remained constructive during the quarter, supported by resilient economy activity and improving signs of private-sector capital expenditure. Recent GDP growth of 7.8% underscored the strength of the domestic demand and overall economic momentum during the period.
  • India continued to benefit from global supply-chain diversification, supporting opportunities for domestic manufacturers and suppliers. Government initiatives focused on localizing production in strategic sectors, including electronics, semiconductors and defense also helped accelerate manufacturing activity. These developments support India's longer-term industrialization and economic development objectives.
  • Oil prices remained an important macroeconomic variable to monitor. The Indian government continued to take measures that limited the immediate impact of higher energy costs on consumer. Nevertheless, a prolonged period of high oil prices could increase inflationary pressure, with implications for household purchasing power, consumer spending and broader economic activity.

Contributors and Detractors

For the quarter ended September 30, 2026, the Matthews India Fund returned -1.00%, (Investor Class) and -0.97% (Institutional Class) while its benchmark, the MSCI India Index, returned -5.52% over the same period.

  • The top three contributors to relative performance, on a sector basis, were consumer discretionary, health care and industrials due to stock selection. The top three detractors to relative performance, on a sector basis, were financials and consumer staples due to an overweight allocation and real estate due to zero allocation.
  • The largest contributors to absolute performance during the quarter included Zomato, a leading online restaurant booking and food delivery company, Neuland Laboratories, a pharmaceutical firm and Ather Energy, an electric vehicle manufacturer.
  • The top three detractors to performance during the quarter included HDFC Bank, a leading bank and financial services company, Thermax, an energy equipment manufacturer and Axis Bank, a banking services provider.

Outlook

  • India's macroeconomic outlook remains favorable, supported by strong GDP growth, rising private investment, and structural manufacturing tailwinds driven by global supply chain diversification. While the long-term outlook remains constructive, investors should closely monitor oil prices and global interest rate trends, as both could potentially moderate growth and negatively impact consumer demand if they remain elevated for an extended period.
  • Additionally, higher global interest rates is likely to continue to put pressure on Indian rupee which in turn would likely drive a tighter monetary policy. To maintain currency stability, the Reserve Bank of India may need to raise interest rates in response to tighter global monetary conditions. Against this backdrop, we believe current valuations already reflect expectations of future rate increases.
  • El Nino related weather disruption and its impact on agriculture output is another risk worth monitoring in context of India. Moderation in agricultural output on back of weather disruption will likely negatively impact overall consumption in the economy.
  • Within this environment, we continue to employ an all-cap approach, seeking opportunities across market capitalizations and including off-benchmark exposure where we believe we can find attractive long-term opportunities.
