The Fund seeks to invest in companies capable of sustainable growth based on the fundamental characteristics of those companies, including balance sheet information; number of employees; size and stability of cash flow; management’s depth, adaptability and integrity; product lines; marketing strategies; corporate governance; and financial health.

Risks

Commentary

Period ended September 30, 2026

Market Environment

  • Asian equity markets declined during the third quarter as higher oil prices, rising U.S. bond yields, geopolitical tensions and global trade uncertainty weighed on investor sentiment. Performance diverged across countries and sectors, creating a more selective environment for investors and broadening market leadership beyond the narrow group of AI-related companies that had driven returns earlier in the year.
  • Technology-sector volatility remained an important driver of performance across Asia. South Korea experienced significant market swings despite strong underlying fundamentals, while export growth continued to benefit from semiconductor demand. Taiwan remained relatively resilient supported by ongoing investment in AI infrastructure and semiconductor exports. Following strong gains across part of the technology supply chain, however, investors became increasingly focused on valuations and the sustainability of earnings growth.
  • China continued to face a mixed economic backdrop, with subdued consumer demand, weak property activity and softer industrial profits despite policy support measures. At the same time, selected Chinese financials, materials and internet businesses demonstrated resilient earnings and drew greater investor interest as valuations remained attractive relative to regional peers.
  • India, a major oil importer, posted gains as easing tensions in the Middle East triggered a decline in energy prices. The market, however, continued to face headwinds, including AI disruptions to its key software and IT sectors.
  • India underperformed during the quarter as foreign investor outflows, currency weakness and higher energy prices weighed on sentiment. Elsewhere in the region, Singapore benefited from technology-related activity and resilient economic growth, while selected commodity-oriented businesses across Asia were supported by firmer metals and energy prices.
  • More broadly, market leadership became increasingly diverse, with financials, industrials and commodity-related businesses generally holding up better than many higher-growth technology companies. This reflected greater investors focus on earnings quality, valuations and company-specific fundamentals. We believe this environment remains supportive of a flexible investment approach that can dynamically balance exposure across growth, core and value opportunities while adapting to changing market conditions.

Contributors and Detractors

For the quarter ended September 30, 2026, the Matthews Pacific Fund returned -7.70% (Investor Class) and -7.68% (Institutional Class) while its benchmark, the MSCI All Country Asia ex Japan Index, returned -0.23% over the same period.

  • On a country basis, the top three contributors to relative performance were Singapore and the United Kingdom due to overweight allocation and India due to stock selection. The top three detractors were China/Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea due to stock selection.
  • On a sector basis, the top three contributors to relative performance were financials due to stock selection, energy due and consumer staples due to underweight allocations. The top three detractors were information technology and industrials due to selection along with consumer discretionary due to an overweight allocation.
  • The largest contributors to absolute performance during the quarter included DBS Group Holdings, a Singaporean financial services firm, China Construction Bank, a banking services provider and WuXi AppTec, a China-based global contract research, development, and manufacturing provider of pharmaceutical and biotechnology services. The top three detractors to absolute performance during the quarter were Samsung Electronics, a South Korean semiconductor and consumer electronics maker, SK Hynix, a South Korean semiconductor company and SK Square, a South Korean investment company.
  • The Q3 underperformance was largely attributable to the pullback in Asian technology stocks, particularly in South Korea. We remain constructive entering Q4 of 2026, supported by our expectations for positive earnings outlooks and positive earnings revisions across our technology holdings. The market weakness also enables us to selectively increase technology exposure at more attractive valuations.

Outlook

  • We remain constructive on the long-term opportunity set across Asia despite continued market volatility and periodic shifts in investor sentiment. Economic conditions across the region remain uneven, with China's recovery progressing gradually, while Taiwan and South Korea continue to benefit from technology demand and export growth. India continues to offer attractive long-term structural growth opportunities despite periods of market volatility, and we continue to see selective opportunities across ASEAN markets.
  • Given the uneven market, our all-sector, all-country, all-cap strategy remains disciplined and focused on navigating market cycles, with sector and geographic allocations adjusted as conditions evolve.
  • We believe the current investment environment is becoming increasingly supportive of active management. Greater dispersion across countries, sectors and individual companies could broaden the opportunity set for investors taking a flexible and selective approach.
  • Overall, fundamentals remain strong across Asia, and we expect earnings growth to remain stable over the next few quarters. If political risk in the Middle East subsides, this could be an additional positive. While periods of market volatility are likely to persist, further corrections could create attractive opportunities to selectively increase exposure.
